Samsung Electronics America announced last month that it's shifting its headquarters from New Jersey to Texas by the end of this year. As the move gets underway, it has emerged that Samsung has fired hundreds of employees from its phone, TV, and home appliances business in the United States.
A total of 739 roles have been cut from the company's Englewood Cliffs offices in New Jersey. Additionally, it has also fired around 100 workers from its Plano, Texas location.
More than 60% of the New Jersey workforce has been let go
Samsung confirmed to Reuters that the majority of the 739 affected New Jersey employees were provided with relocation offers. The others were simply let go. The company employed around 1,200 people in New Jersey at its Englewood Cliffs campus which opened just 10 months ago. It has now let go around 60% of the entire workforce at that site.
Samsung Electronics America handles sales and marketing for Samsung smartphones, TVs, monitors, home appliances, and other products in the country. The roles that have been cut in New Jersey don't impact the company's semiconductor operations which are primarily based in Texas. The workers said to have been let go in Plano are also claimed to have been from the mobile division primarily.
The 739 figure is also confirmed by the WARN notice that was posted to disclose the job cuts. The figure about job cuts at the Plano site was provided to the outlet on the condition of anonymity by a laid-off employee.
The company did say in a statement that these layoffs aren't part of any larger global restructuring in the consumer electronics business. It can be viewed as more of a localized decision meant to achieve “stronger collaboration and optimize the organization.”
